Falling off the wagon…

‘The problem with people who have no vices, is that generally, you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues’ (Elizabeth Taylor)

We all have times where we fall off the wagon, that devious blip in our new diet and exercise regime, the moment where our self-control and discipline is replaced by this ‘kid at fat-camp with secret stash of treats’ craziness…(excuse the political incorrectness, but I bet you relate to the analogy). Just this last week my mom had such a blip. She was inspired to bake, something she hasn’t done in a while, and she made 12 delicious orange cupcakes (truly delicious, I had a couple myself). But, at home alone with 12 cupcakes? Well, you can guess the outcome…Cupcakes 1 Mom 0.

And this is okay. Actually, it’s not great, but it’s not the end of the world either is what I’m trying to say. You’re aiming for a lifestyle with healthy eating and exercise, so it’s not about perfection, but rather it’s about consistency. Consistently eating healthily, consistently doing exercise, so if you have a ‘blip’, it’s okay, it’s not the end of the world. Often people will start a diet or exercise regime and have a blip, then give up completely, decide they’ve failed, and just go back to their previous habits. They say failure prepares you for success. But in order to achieve success you need to look at why you failed: what triggered the blip, how you can prevent it and what lesson you can learn from it. In my mother’s case, it would be not to bake unless there are more people around the eat the tempting cupcakes!

So the next time you have a blip (which hopefully is not often), forgive yourself, and figure out how you can prevent such a blip from reoccuring. For me, the biggest factor effecting blips like this is preparation. If I don’t take the time to plan and prepare healthy food and snacks, and I miss a meal…well let’s just say hunger has no rationality. So I always try have a healty snack to hand, and plan my meals and grocery shop for the week.

I hope you have a blip-free week!
